A significant figure in Western Australia’s political and mining sectors is currently in serious condition after a reported assault that occurred in the early hours of Saturday morning in Perth's city center.
The individual, who is 36 years old, sustained a severe head injury after being knocked unconscious on the street outside a nightclub in Northbridge. He was quickly transported to Royal Perth Hospital, where he is being treated for life-threatening injuries and remains in critical condition.
According to a spokesperson for WA Police, a 20-year-old man from Lesmurdie has been arrested and charged with causing grievous bodily harm in connection with this incident. This suspect is currently held in custody and is expected to appear in front of the Perth Magistrates Court later today.
Nine News Perth has identified the victim as Tim Picton, a director at the prominent mining company Mineral Resources. In a heartfelt statement, Picton’s family confirmed that he is still in critical condition in the hospital. They expressed their focus on supporting each other during this challenging time, saying, "As a family, we are focused entirely on being with him and supporting one another."
They went on to extend their gratitude to St John Ambulance, the medical professionals at Royal Perth Hospital, and WA Police for their diligent care and support throughout this ordeal. The family also acknowledged the kindness displayed by Tim’s friends and colleagues, which has been invaluable during this difficult period.
Tim Picton is described by his family as a beloved father, husband, brother, and son, as well as a dear friend to many across Australia. They requested privacy as they navigate the upcoming days, stating, "We will not be making any further public comment at this time."
Notably, Picton played a crucial role in the Labor party’s campaign in 2021, which resulted in a decisive victory for Mark McGowan. His professional background also includes experience working alongside Victorian Premier Dan Andrews, and his brother, Chris Picton, serves as a Minister in the South Australian government.
Police have reported that the assault took place around 5:35 AM, during which Picton struck his head on the pavement near the intersection of James Street and Mountain Terrace. Authorities are encouraging any witnesses to step forward with information regarding the incident.
