A total of 36 teams will participate in the competition.

After the draw for the new format, Liverpool will play Champions League champion Real Madrid when they return to the competition.

Aston Villa plays Scottish champions Celtic, while Manchester City and Arsenal play Paris St-Germain. In the “league phase,” each team plays eight matches. This year’s men’s competition will be drastically different, with a group stage ending.

The crucial button was pressed by Portugal striker Cristiano Ronaldo to cause a computer system to choose the fixtures during the high-tech draw that took place in Monaco on Thursday.

Each team in the 36-team competition will play eight games in the league format, four at home and four away, against two of its competitors from each of the four seeding pots.

Teams that place ninth through twenty-fourth will play in a two-leg knockout play-off to have the opportunity to join the top eight teams, which will automatically advance to the round of sixteen. The teams who place 25th or lower will be eliminated and not be allowed to compete in the Europa League.

Under the revised structure, there will be 189 matches instead of 125. Instead of six, each team will play a minimum of eight games and a maximum of seventeen.

The Champions League kicks off on September 17–19. Because of the extra matches, the league phase ends on January 29 instead of before Christmas.
