Rakell & Karlsson Make Team Sweden for 2026 Olympics! Penguins Stars Head to Milan-Cortina (2026)

Boldly stepping onto the international stage, Team Sweden is set to showcase its talent at the 2026 Olympics with a notable contribution from the Pittsburgh Penguins. The roster proudly includes two standout players: Rickard Rakell and Erik Karlsson, who were officially announced today.

Erik Karlsson, a player known for his impressive skills, made headlines last year when he was among the first six athletes selected for the 4 Nations Face-off. However, he did not receive an early call-up for the Olympic squad, a decision that he later indicated fueled his determination throughout the season. This motivation appears to be paying off, as Karlsson is currently enjoying one of his best seasons yet with the Penguins, amassing 30 points in just 39 games played.

On the other hand, the selection of Rakell may come as a surprise to some, given his recent performance. Unfortunately, he suffered a broken hand earlier this season, resulting in only four goals over 19 games played. Despite his struggles, last season he proved himself by scoring 35 goals. While Rakell was part of Sweden's 4 Nations team, his participation was limited to just two games, suggesting that he might play a more supportive role in the upcoming Olympics.

Interestingly, the Penguins will not have any players representing Finland or the United States, which isn't entirely unexpected. Although there was some discussion around Bryan Rust potentially making the U.S. team, the competition was fierce. With talented players like Jason Robertson, Cole Caufield, Alex Tuch, and Cutter Gauthier also vying for spots, it's no surprise Rust wasn’t heavily considered. However, the U.S. roster does feature some connections to Pittsburgh through key figures like Bill Guerin and Mike Sullivan, along with Western Pennsylvania natives J.T. Miller and Vincent Trocheck, and former Penguin Jake Guentzel.

As previously confirmed, Sidney Crosby will once again take the helm as captain of the highly regarded Canadian team (you can find more details on this via their official channels).

While there hasn't been an official announcement regarding Latvia's Olympic team yet, it is anticipated that Arturs Silovs will play a significant role, especially since he is one of only two Latvian goalies currently competing in the NHL, alongside Elvis Merzlikins from Columbus.

The Penguins are scheduled to wrap up their activities before the Olympic break on February 5th, with the Olympic games commencing on February 11th and culminating in the gold medal match on the 22nd. Following this exciting international event, Pittsburgh will resume its NHL schedule on February 26th.
