That's the ambitious goal of the "Padhe Rohtak, Likhe Rohtak" initiative, and it's making impressive strides! Launched by the Rohtak district administration, this mission aims for 100% Foundational Literacy and Numeracy (FLN) by March 2026. Aligned with the broader NIPUN Haryana Mission, it's designed to be a district-level model, incorporating classroom restructuring, data-driven tracking, and active community involvement. The program, spearheaded by the Deputy Commissioner of Rohtak in July 2025, has introduced a more structured, results-oriented approach to teaching in government primary schools (Classes 1 to 5). The aim is to make learning more engaging for children while fostering stronger relationships between teachers, parents, and the administration.
But why did Rohtak need to intervene in the first place? A review of primary schools revealed a concerning trend: many students were advancing to higher grades without mastering fundamental reading, writing, and math skills. The administration responded with targeted interventions to ensure early correction and measurable improvement.
So, what's changing on the ground? A key reform is the introduction of a daily 40-minute "Zero Period" in all government primary schools, specifically dedicated to foundational reading and numeracy. This dedicated time ensures that these essential skills receive focused attention.
To monitor progress effectively, a Digital Skill Passbook has been implemented. This innovative tool tracks each child's learning journey, enabling timely academic support and personalized guidance. Furthermore, early childhood learning is being enhanced through the creation of NIPUN Vatikas in primary schools, creating a more conducive learning environment. Additionally, 50 Anganwadi centers are being upgraded to better prepare children for school.
Parental involvement is also a cornerstone of this initiative. Mother-Teacher Circles are being established to improve communication between home and school, making families active participants in their children's learning.
The results so far are promising. The district is already reporting visible improvements: reading proficiency has jumped from 28% to 64%, and subtraction proficiency has increased from 44% to 78%. The Zero Period has been successfully implemented across all primary schools in the district.
