Margate Main Sands Beach Gets £95,000 Boardwalk for Disability Accessibility | Kent News (2026)

Get ready for a game-changer at Margate Main Sands Beach! A £95,000 investment is set to transform this popular Kent beach into a more inclusive space for all.

But here's where it gets controversial... The proposed boardwalk aims to enhance accessibility for individuals with mobility challenges. With a draft budget of £180,000 for one-off public realm improvements, Margate Main Sands will receive a significant portion of this funding.

And this is the part most people miss... The council's commitment to accessibility extends beyond just this beach. They've allocated funds for new lighting at St Peter's Recreation Ground and litter clearance on the A299. It's a comprehensive approach to making the area more welcoming and safe.

Council leader Rick Everitt proposed this initiative after internal discussions within the Labour group. At a TDC cabinet meeting on January 22nd, he emphasized the council's dedication to improving accessibility and tackling litter hotspots, despite financial constraints.

"A Margate boardwalk will mirror the success of Broadstairs, offering a similar experience to residents and visitors with mobility issues," Everitt stated. He added that the council is optimistic about extending this initiative to Ramsgate as well.

Councillors will scrutinize the entire budget, including these proposals, at an upcoming meeting. The final vote on the budget is scheduled for February 26th, so stay tuned!

What do you think about this accessibility initiative? Is it a step in the right direction, or are there other areas that should be prioritized? We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments below!
