Is the Lorton Landfill closing down? ›

The permanent closure process involved capping the landfill and planting vegetation, and was completed in 2021.

Glass creates many problems for single stream recycling. Glass containers break during collection and processing; liquids in the glass bottles and jars negatively impact paper and cardboard; and broken glass pieces can collect in other processed materials, which is hazardous to machinery and workers.

Old books can be recycled, but putting them in your household recycling can cause problems due to the glue, string and other materials that hold them together, especially hardback books. Recyclers can't do much with books that are glued together, and guillotining the pages apart would be too time-consuming.

Recycling Works employs the help of such a sophisticated sorting machine that the lids on glass containers do not have to be removed before placing the containers into regular recycling.
