For Linux enthusiasts, the latest update, version 6.19, brings a game-changer for modern laptop users with high-density displays. A simple font change can make a world of difference!
Among the usual fixes and code clean-ups for the FBDEV subsystem, Linux 6.19 introduces a new console font option. This seemingly minor addition addresses a critical issue: the readability of text on high-resolution laptop screens.
The fix was proposed by Neilay Kharwadkar, who highlighted the inadequacy of existing font options for modern HiDPI displays. Common scaled resolutions like 1280x800 and 1440x900 on 13-16 inch laptops were a challenge with the default 8x16 font, making it difficult to read for extended periods. On the other hand, the 16x32 font was too large, offering only 25-28 rows.
Enter Terminus 10x18, a font designed to strike the perfect balance. With its clean, fixed-width design, Terminus 10x18 provides improved readability while maintaining practical row counts (44-50 rows). It's a comfortable and readable font for early boot messages and kernel panics, ensuring users can navigate these critical moments with ease.
The font was converted from the standard Terminus ter-i18b.psf using psftools and formatted to match kernel font conventions. The best part? It's a non-intrusive patch, so most users won't even notice the change, but they'll certainly appreciate the improved readability.
To enable this new font, users can simply select the FONT_TER10x18 option in the Linux kernel Kconfig. It's a great alternative to the existing Terminus 16x32 option or the default 8x16 font. And for those who prefer a 10x16 pixel font, this is the only option available.
