Fable's Heartless Landlord Feature: A Look at the Upcoming RPG Reboot (2026)

Prepare to embrace your inner villain! After a five-year wait, Microsoft has finally given us a tantalizing glimpse into the highly anticipated reboot of the legendary Fable RPG franchise. Revealed during the recent Developer Direct showcase, Playground Games, the brilliant minds behind the Forza Horizon series, unveiled nearly 11 minutes of gameplay. This new adventure promises a fully open world to explore, bringing back beloved locations like Bowerstone and offering a fresh take on the classic Fable experience.

While the exact placement in the Fable timeline remains a mystery, the footage suggests a return to a more traditional medieval fantasy setting, a departure from the industrial revolution era seen in Fable 3. The narrative kicks off with your character as the first hero born in Albion in a generation. Your journey begins in childhood in Briar Hill, a peaceful existence shattered when a "mysterious stranger" turns everyone to stone. Before you even embark, you'll have the power to shape your hero's appearance, with extensive customization options including skin tones, head shapes, tattoos, and scars.

But here's where it gets interesting... While the combat appears to blend melee, ranged weapons, and magic, and introduces a posture meter for enemies that can be broken for "stylish" finishers, it might not deliver the same visceral punch as some other action titles. And this is the part most people miss... The true depth of Fable lies beyond just battling monsters. Just like in the original games, you can pursue romantic relationships, leading to marriage and children. And no, you're not restricted to just one partner! It seems Playground is leaning into a modern polycule simulator within Albion. Beyond relationships, you can become a real estate mogul, purchasing every house and business in the land. The NPCs will certainly have opinions about your choices; imagine evicting an artist only to have them confront you on the street, calling you "awful". Wonderful, isn't it?

From a technical standpoint, the preview footage showed some rough edges, with noticeable issues in frame rate and frame pacing, and some animation ghosting. We're hoping Playground Games has ample time before the autumn release to polish the presentation to a shine. When it finally arrives, you'll be able to experience this new Fable on Xbox Series X/S, PC (Xbox and Steam), PlayStation 5, and Game Pass Ultimate.

Microsoft first confirmed this new Fable was in development way back in 2020. It took them three years to share the first look, and after an initial 2025 release window, it was ultimately delayed to this year.

What do you think? Are you excited to dive into the world of Fable and make your own morally ambiguous choices, or do you think the focus on relationships and property ownership detracts from the core RPG experience? Let us know in the comments below!
