Imagine this: a split-second decision on the road leads to a devastating crash, leaving seven people injured and a community shaken. This is the harsh reality of careless overtaking, a dangerous practice that continues to plague Uganda's highways. On Thursday, December 5, 2025, the Kampala-Jinja Road became the latest stage for such a tragedy when a reckless maneuver sparked a serious accident in Buikwe District's Bulumagi village. But here's where it gets even more concerning: could stricter enforcement and driver education prevent these preventable accidents?
According to Ssezibwa Region Police spokesperson SP Hellen Butoto, the collision involved two vehicles: a Fuso Fighter truck (UBG 263K), driven by 55-year-old Jinja resident Ntabazi Joseph, and a Toyota Hiace minibus (UBS 644E) with an unidentified driver. And this is the part most people miss: the Hiace, traveling from Jinja to Kampala, attempted a risky overtaking maneuver. Upon realizing an oncoming vehicle was approaching, the driver panicked, swerving abruptly and colliding with the very truck they were trying to pass. The force of the impact caused both vehicles to overturn, with the Fuso spilling its cargo of spirit cartons across the road.
Seven individuals sustained injuries and were rushed to Jinja Regional Referral Hospital. Among them were:
- Bossa Andrew, a male adult taxi passenger from Busia
- Namulondo Tracy, a 15-year-old female from Buyende District
- Kasadha Faziri, a 30-year-old male from Mityana
- Baseke Jalia, a 25-year-old female from Mayuge District
- Bakesigamukama, a 31-year-old male from Bugiri
- Ntabazi Joseph, the Fuso driver
- Ntabazi Joram, the 20-year-old Fuso assistant, both from Jinja City
Is it fair to say that impatience and a lack of road awareness are costing lives? The damaged vehicles have been impounded at Njeru Police Station, awaiting inspection by the Inspector of Vehicles. SP Butoto assured the public that investigations are ongoing. However, this incident raises crucial questions: Are our roads becoming increasingly dangerous due to reckless driving? What measures can be implemented to curb this alarming trend? We want to hear from you – share your thoughts and experiences in the comments below. Let's spark a conversation that could potentially save lives.
