AI Stocks: A Resurgence Amidst Market Turbulence
The AI trade is back in the game, despite recent declines!
In a surprising turn of events, investors are once again embracing artificial intelligence stocks. After a series of declines, Monday saw a notable rebound, with Nvidia leading the charge, experiencing a 5.8% surge. Broadcom and Microsoft followed suit, with gains of 2.6% and 1.9%, respectively, putting an end to Microsoft's eight-day losing streak, its longest since 2011.
But here's where it gets controversial... While the market is hopeful for a resolution to the U.S. government shutdown, concerns about AI stock valuations persist. The shutdown, if ended, would be a relief for markets, but it doesn't erase the worries about the high prices of AI-related stocks.
CoreWeave, a company deeply intertwined with the AI trade, reported its third-quarter earnings on Monday. While its revenue growth is impressive, clocking in at a whopping 134% year-on-year, the company still operates at a loss. This reminds us of the industry leader, OpenAI, which has been bleeding money despite its innovative contributions to the AI space.
And this is the part most people miss... The comparison between CoreWeave and OpenAI might be a stretch, but it highlights the broader narrative of high revenue and high losses in the AI industry. Mark Haefele, CIO of UBS Global Wealth Management, believes that "AI-related stocks should drive equity markets." However, with the market's focus on valuations, it remains to be seen if this resurgence can sustain itself.
In other news, Russia is making its move in the rare earths game. President Vladimir Putin has ordered a roadmap for the development of rare earth metals, aiming to catch up with peers like China. Russia's estimated reserves of 3.8 million tonnes put it in fifth place globally, just ahead of the U.S. with 1.9 million tonnes.
What do you think? Will AI stocks continue their upward trajectory, or is this just a temporary rebound? And how will Russia's entry into the rare earths market impact global dynamics? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
